South Georgia Therapy Services

Tag: Children, Family PortraitsLori Grice @ 11:06 pm

IMG_1608_cropped to 10x8_resolution of 300 I have photographed this family since the birth of their first son.  Recently, I traveled to Glennville to photograph dad and the boys for his marketing and portraits for his beautiful new physical therapy office - South Georgia Therapy Services.  Last week I photographed mom’s sister with her new baby - which is a real gift from God.  This beautiful family continues to bless me with their business, friendship and referrals.  It has been fun watching them grow as a family.  I am proud of dad’s continued success and thrilled to have my work in his beautiful new office.  Mom is a great friend to the arts and works to inspire future artists everyday in her job as an art and theatre teacher.  In fact, she was recently named WTOC’s top teacher - a well deserved honor.

Senior Photography like no one ELSE!

Over 20 years ago I photographed my first senior session.  Long before I began my business I was the photographer for the yearbook in high school.  Serving on the yearbook staff gave me a real understanding of what it takes to produce a year book and how important year book pictures really are.  Recently I attending my 20th high school reunion.  I received an entirely new appreciation of the importance of GREAT high school pictures.  At the registration table, the host had copied pictures from our Senior yearbook and made name tags for each of us.  OMG!

Many of the seniors I photography now are ones that I have photographed from birth.  Yeah I FEEL REALLY OLD!  Each year I take on a fresh new crop of 25 seniors so I can dedicate the time to each one of them in order to tell their story.  This is one of the most important sessions - because if is their first step into independence.  I walk the line with mom and the senior - creating a balance with how mom sees them and who they really are.

No other area of photography has been impacted more over the past few years than Senior Photography.  There are so many more creative options now.  In addition, the Internet has opened up an entirely new medium of community and communication.  In keeping up with technology I have launched my own Myspace page with the help of Savannah Arts Academy student Brandon James.  Of course, you will find him in my friends list there!  Check out my MySpace page here.  Every Senior Session I create this year will include images for Facebook or Myspace.

I am using this to communicate with my seniors and allow us to connect to share my images both past and present.

Above is a session I did a few weeks ago for a beautiful young lady that I have photographed since she was TWO.  She is so beautiful and so much fun.  Her mom is super cool and a blast to be around.  The bond these two share is really incredible.  (The baby in the slide show is her nephew - BTW)

In this preview of an an entire senior session you see how creative and fun they are.

If you know a senior and think they may be interested in experiencing my difference - please have them call or email to get on the list today!  Several seniors missed out last year. As you watch the slide show - you will better understand why I limit this service.  It takes LOTS of time to do it RIGHT!  Enjoy!

Tips for hiring a Wedding Photographer

Tips for hiring a Wedding Photographer MY Top Ten Suggestions for Hiring a Wedding Photographer

Congratulations! My wish for you is that the fairy tale you dreamed of and probably practiced as a child comes true for you with your prince charming!

There are few portrait events that rival the importance of your wedding. For many brides, your wedding is the first time you will hire a professional photographer. With no prior experience in commissioning a professional photographer, you may be tempted to shop for a photographer as you shop for every other item for the wedding…solely based on price.

You may not realize that on your wedding day almost every professional involved in your wedding is licensed or regulated by a state agency except photographers. That includes your pastor, caterer, stylist, even the person who does your nails. Because of the lack of regulation, almost daily I hear another bride or mother of the bride’s wedding photography horror story.

So what has changed? Technology: digital photography has lowered the barrier for entry and the perceived skill sets in the photography industry. Five to ten years ago, you had to have a strong knowledge of posing, lighting and technical aspects of capturing beautiful images on film. Most wedding photographers would show up at your wedding with ten to thirty thousand of dollars of equipment. Today you can get a pretty good digital camera for $600 and you are now a “professional wedding photographer”. So how do you make the best investment in a professional wedding photographer?

Here are my TOP TEN suggestions for hiring a wedding photographer:

1) Establish a budget for photography. The industry average is 10% of the total wedding budget. Martha Stewart suggests 20%. (If your total wedding budget, dress, flowers, venue, food, beverages, entertainment, etc. is $15,000 then your photography budget should be $1,500 to $3,000)

2) Research your photographer…regardless of who refers you to your photographer. Ask for names and contact information of at least three recent brides. Call them and ask to see their completed wedding album. Ask questions about the photographer’s professionalism, including responsiveness to phone calls and emails prior to and after the wedding, and length of time it took to get the completed wedding album delivered. Many photographers provide “incentives” to other vendors for referrals. Even though you think you are getting an “honest” referral based on the photographer’s quality of work and past experience, this may not be the case.

3) Discuss their formal training in photography and years in business. (not how long they have been taking pictures) Keep in mind that 50% of small businesses in America fail in the first five years.

4) Ask if they are a member of a professional trade association, such as the Professional Photographers of America. (PPA requires its members to abide by a professional code of ethics and offers indemnification, mediation and other critical legal support which protects you, the consumer)

5) If they are a member of the PPA, find out if they are Certified by the PPA. (this volunteer certification validates that they at least have a critical technical knowledge of photography and that they take their trade seriously enough to voluntarily help raise the professional standards by becoming certified as a professional photographer)

6) Does your photographer have a storefront or professional office and maintain regular business hours? Often the biggest challenge comes from hiring a photographer with no permanent address and only a cell phone and yahoo or hotmail email account. Would you use a doctor, lawyer or other professional that worked out of a bedroom of their home? Anyone can make images look great on a web site. Website templates make it very easy for everyone to have a very professional looking website. Don’t be fooled by the perception of success.

7) Make certain your wedding package includes EVERYTHING you want, from photography of the wedding day to a completed wedding album. (57% of brides surveyed by Kodak in 2007 only received a high resolution DVD of images – NO PRINTED PICTURES AND NO WEDDING ALBUM) What they thought was a great deal turned quickly into a nightmare. Often these digital files are so large that most of the brides could not open them on a normal computer. The largest amount of time and often talent, in addition to capturing the photographs on your wedding day, occurs after the wedding. It is all the post production of the event including digital processing, color correction and retouching of the images and designing and printing a beautiful wedding album that require tremendous talent and TIME. Post production is NOT an option that is available at most one-hour photo labs – so you ARE NOT saving money trying to have your images printed yourself. Could you imagine going to a lawyer and after a very expensive hour of her time – she sends you home with a do it yourself kit to finish your legal documents?

8) How does your photographer archive your wedding files? Get a purchase option for your files in writing. If you do get a DVD of images, immediately make a copy to your hard drive and a second copy to place in your safe deposit box at your bank.

9) Get EVERYTHING in writing. Ask to review your contract overnight before signing. Get your attorney to review it. It will be well worth the money if something goes wrong.

10) Find out your photographer’s contingency plans. In the event of an illness, accident, or other event preventing your photographer from being able to photograph your wedding, learn their contingency plan to have your event photographed with equal or greater talent. Also, what is their equipment contingency plan? Do they have a back-up camera and back-up lighting equipment in case something is dropped and damaged in the middle of your wedding?

So how did your photographer score???

Don’t panic if they didn’t score a 10 of 10. This list has been comprised based on my 20+ years of experience in the photography industry and from the “stories” I keep hearing over and over from brides. Keep in mind that often the most talented artists may not have the strongest business and customer service skills. The process of hiring your photographer will most likely require some give and take but now you can make a more informed and educated decision.

Congratulations! My wish for you is that the fairy tale you dreamed of and probably practiced as a child comes true for you with your prince charming!

Your Portrait Story featured in Savannah Morning News

Tag: Baby's First Year, Your Portrait, Your StoryLori Grice @ 9:13 pm

A few days ago I shared a slide show featuring Stefanie and Sean Reeder of Savannah.  The slide show was an example of the importance of documenting artistically this important first year.   Their story was featured as one of our Your Portrait, Your Story features on my blog.  Anne Hart, of the Savannah Morning News, read their story on the blog and sought them out.  This Easter Sunday she featured their story.  Click here to read the story.  In addtion to writing for the Savannah Morning News, Anne is also the founder and publisher of Southern Mama’s website.  It is one of my favorite sites and you can find it in my favorites list.  Please check it out if you have not already discovered it.

Here is Anne’s story:

Hart to Heart: When a miscarriage is prevented

Anne Hart | Sunday, March 23, 2008 at 12:30 am

The pregnancy wasn’t supposed to last. At least, that’s what the medical tests showed.

Stefanie and Sean Reeder of Savannah had planned for children for so long. Now they were being told Stefanie would most likely miscarriage in a few days.

Stefanie and Sean had their children’s names picked out since they were high school sweethearts in a small Kentucky town. Grant for a boy. Molly for a girl.

On trips, the couple bought children’s books in lieu of traditional souvenirs, even though they didn’t have children yet.

But becoming parents turned out to be more difficult than expected. Stefanie has a thyroid disorder and gene mutation that made getting pregnant a challenge.

A memorable announcement

Month after month, she had negative home pregnancy tests. After she finally got a positive one, she was so thrilled she took a picture of it.

Stefanie managed to hide her exuberance from Sean for two days. She wanted a memorable way to announce the news.

The couple already had a photo appointment set up with photographer Lori Grice. Stefanie and Lori conspired together to capture the “I’m pregnant” moment.

While Lori shot portraits of the couple, Stefanie pulled Sean’s arms around her. Stefanie told her husband “Put your hands on the baby.”

He was stunned. “Whose baby?” “Our baby,” Stefanie said.

That moment came to mind a few days later as Stefanie and Sean were told the pregnancy most likely would not last.

Medical and divine intervention

Stefanie said Dr. Lawrence Odom was sympathetic as he explained that the pregnancy hormone HCG was not increasing as it should.

Miscarriages are often seen as the body’s way of ending an unhealthy pregnancy. Fetal chromosome abnormalities account for about half of all miscarriages.

But what about the other half?

Odom heads a program - called pregnancy loss evaluation and prevention at St. Joseph’s/Candler Telfair Reproductive Center - that specializes in preventing “preventable” miscarriages.

The program’s goal is not to prevent miscarriages that are the result of chromosomal abnormalities, but those that could, with some medical intervention, have resulted in healthy babies.

Stefanie had started going to Odom, a reproductive endocrinologist, because of the difficulties she had becoming pregnant. She believes divine guidance led her to his specialized practice since the threat of miscarriage turned out to be more of a problem.

Stefanie recalls asking Odom what the chances were the pregnancy would continue. He sadly held up his hand, indicating maybe five pregnancies with hormone levels like hers had been successful in his 20 or so years of practice.

Even Stefanie’s medical paperwork didn’t give much hope. It was filled out to indicate the most likely outcome: “spontaneous abortion” the medical term for miscarriage.

Odom advised the Reeders to cancel their travel plans that weekend and told them the signs of a miscarriage. He also told the Reeders he would pray for them. They asked loved ones to do the same.

That night Stefanie did what she had done since finding out she was pregnant. She read “Goodnight Moon” aloud to her unborn baby.

Sean put his hand on Stefanie’s belly and prayed.

“We decided this is our baby as long as he’s with us,” Stefanie said.

Stefanie and Sean knew that medically speaking, their baby didn’t have much chance. But they hoped God had other plans.

Turned out, He did.

After several days, Stefanie still had not miscarried.

Her blood work was checked again. Her pregnancy hormones had increased dramatically. There were still complications, including a small gestational sac indicating that the fetus wasn’t getting enough blood. It wasn’t growing.

That’s where Odom’s medical intervention helped. Two-daily shots of the blood thinner Heparin until 36 weeks, HCG hormone shots twice a week for five months and progesterone suppositories helped the pregnancy continue.

On May 30, 2006, the baby who wasn’t expected to make it was born.

The wonder boy

At the Reeders’ church, Grant, now 1, is known as the Wonder Baby.  His loved ones credit Grant’s life to a mix of faith and science.

“A little bit of intervention and a whole lot of prayer, and there he is,” Stefanie said.

Grant is living proof of Odom’s belief that some miscarriages are preventable.

“Nobody with a genetically OK baby should suffer a miscarriage,” Odom said.

At the Reeder home, photo albums and framed portraits chronicle Grant’s life. But the most important photo hangs just outside the nursery door.

It’s of the exact moment when Grant’s mommy told his daddy “Put your hands on the baby.”

It’s of the exact moment his parents knew they’d hold onto him and never let go.

EGGstravaganza

Shirlee Deal Easter party card frontShirlee Deal Easter party card back  Again the Deal’s have outdone themselves with their Easter EGGstravaganza. Shirlee is the grandmother to Leah and if you know her then you know she and her husband Edgar NEVER half do anything.  Last year we were blown away - but this year was even more incredible than you can imagine.  Now I know that this is probably what Easter events are like at your home every year.  But for us, it is a very special treat.  The catered lunch included a spread that would make even the pickiest eater think she was in heaven.  Of course it was served under tents with tables complete with pastel linens and chair covers, silver and fresh cut flower arrangements.  Then there were games including inflatables.  Yes, inflatables:  a giant slide, a moon walk, and a basketball throw.  There were other game stations including target shooting with electronic shooting systems and paint ball guns.  A ring toss, ball toss and more.  The traditional egg hunt topped off the days fun - with hundreds of eggs creatively hidden - each with special prizes.  Did I mention PRIZES?  Well everything you did you received a ticket for.  These tickets become currency to “purchase” items from the prize tent.

I am not sure if they were “carnies” in another life or just always wanted to own their own carnival.  Regardless, those of us who attended this year’s event will be talking about it for a LONG time.  We were honored to be included.  Edie Grace had a blast as did we!  I just wonder how they will top this next year?IMG_9592

Happy Easter

Tag: Edie Grace, PersonalLori Grice @ 1:32 pm

Edie Grace kicked off her Easter weekend on Friday with a super fun Easter party for her class at Pinewood.  She had a blast hunting eggs, playing games and DSCN3923even had her face painted.  Friday night we attended Good Friday services at our church, Believers Statesboro.  The rejoice praise team and drama team produced a powerful program entitled “The Cross.”  Yesterday she had fun with her cousins and last night we colored Easter eggs.  This morning the Easter Bunny made a quick stop by the house.  Edie Grace apparently has been a very good girl.  We have just returned from Sunday services and I photographed Edie Grace in her Easter dress at this beautiful flower cross at First Methodist Church in downtown Statesboro.  We are heading now to a client of ours Easter EGGstravaganza.  This is the second year they have hosted this event for their family and a few friends.  Edie Grace is so EGGcited!  I will give you a full report on this fun day later tonight.  Hope you are having a GREAT Easter.

This is a special day for Edie Grace.  No matter how you arrange her initials they spell EGG.  This makes today even more special for Edie Grace Grice!

Baby’s First Year

aadIMG_9812 My first Strasburg Children Savannah session in Forsyth Park this week was with an adorable and very special little guy.  I have photographed his parents since they arrived in Savannah just after they were married.  They had a long journey working with Savannah fertility specialist Dr. Lawrence Odom to bring their special little boy into the world.  Read their story on my blog here.

Easter Sunday Ann Hart wrote a wonderful story about Stefanie and Sean.  Read it here.

I have put together a slide show from their sessions throughout the baby’s first year and beyond.  Yes - mom shared the news with dad that they were expecting in my studio.  It remain’s one of the most emotional and special sessions I have photographed.

Good Friday…

Tag: PersonalLori Grice @ 9:28 am

I wonder how many times Good Friday and the first day of spring have been on the same day?  It really makes for a neat combination.  The renewal of the plants and trees for another year and the renewal of our faith.  Just as the trees and plants lie dormant over the fall and appear dead, my Savior died on a Friday and appeared dead but rose back to life again on a Sunday that we now call Easter.

I want to invite you, again, to the Easter music program at Believer’s church.  I can’t wait to go!  Call us if you need directions.  It begins tonight at 7PM.

I also want to share this from my Guideposts Daily Devotional book.  It always amazes me how something written months ago to meet a publishing deadline can be so perfect for the date it is meant to be read.  Our economy and country were in MUCH better shape when this was written…and there wasn’t $150 million of tornado damage in Atlanta and flooding going on…ect., ect.

And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit MyIMG_2729 Spirit.” and having said this, He breathed His last.  Luke 23:46

The inevitable finally happened:  Jesus was arrested on the night of Passover, interrogated, brutally tortured and then condemned to the most shameful of deaths–crucifixion.  Hanging on the Cross in shock and pain, He gradually slipped into a coma.  On the edge of the chasm between life and death, He felt rejection and despair and , according to Mark’s gospel, shrieked, “My God, My God, Why have You forsaken me?  (15:34 NAS).

William Barclay wonders if perhaps, in His final moments, as His vision blurred and His lungs could no longer breathe, Jesus gazed at his Mother, standing at the foot of the Cross, and remembered the bedtime prayer, echoing Psalm 31:5, that every Jewish mother taught her child to pray, “Into Your hands I commit my spirit.”

Sometimes when confronted with the monstrous evil and destruction in our world, it’s hard for me to believe that I haven’t been abandoned.  It’s difficult to believe that LOVE will conquer evil and that goodness will prevail.  But in these very moments, I must whisper with childlike faith, “Father, into Your hands I commit my Spirit.”

Dear Father, please teach me, Your child, to pray in the words of Jesus uttered on the Cross.—–  Scott Walker

I hope Good Friday and Easter are wonderful for you and your family this year.  While hunting for the prize egg, take a second and think about the blessings you and your family have already experienced in 2008.

Wishing you the best Easter ever!!!
